History
Hiram Lodge No. 21 has enjoyed a long and prosperous history in Seaford. Over the last fifty years, the flame of Brotherhood has continued to shine brightly from this Lodge.
In 1966, under the leadership of Worshipful Master Domenick Monaco, new carpet and air conditioning were installed in the Lodge, which no doubt provided a great relief to the membership. At the same time an addition was added to the back of the building to have a room for fellowship, with tables, seating, refrigerator and photos of all the Past Masters. Past Master Monaco is a fifty-year member and has instructed around 200 candidates over the years including many who went on to be Worshipful Master.
Also in 1966, one of the Lodges own was elected Grand Master of Masons in Delaware in the person of R. Franklin Gordy. He was the fourth member of Hiram Lodge No. 21 to be so honored.
In 1972, Floyd Lankford, PM started a chair drive, which was completed in 1978 during the term of Jim Carey, PM.
In 1983, a new blue carpet was installed while Bruce Davis was Worshipful Master.
In 1984, having Lewis “Jim” Blackwell elected Grand Master, again honored the Lodge. Brother Blackwell also served as the Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Delaware in 1985.
In 1985, theater chairs and another air conditioner were installed, while Jim Mollohan was Worshipful Master, again adding to the comfort of the brothers while attending and supporting lodge functions.
In 1993, the Lodge under the leadership of PM John Owings had Brother John O’Bier raised by Past Grand Master Paul Ellis of Gethsemane Lodge at the George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, VA.
In 1995, Keith Jester was named Worshipful Master of the Year for District No. 3 and had a “Bring a Friend Night” during the year.
In 1996, PM John Owings started Hiram’s Civil War Degree Team and raised John Alstadt, Jr. to Master Mason.
For Ladies Night in 1977, the entertainment was Jack Foraker, and his puppet looked like PGM Jim Blackwell. It was one of the biggest laughs Hiram has ever had.
Worshipful Master Rick Stewart had all the Past Master’s pictures copied in 1998, and put them into a book that along with many artifacts of the Lodge were accepted into the Seaford Museum.
In 2000, Worshipful Master Frank Bradley, started a program to have Hiram Lodge No. 21 signs put on all the Chamber of Commerce signs entering Seaford. JW Dan Ludquist started the “Lewis J. Blackwell Scholarship Fund” to aid students with their finances for furthering their education.
Wayne Simpler was named Worshipful Master of the Year for District No. 3 in 2001. At the suggestion of Junior Deacon John Russell, the Lodge started a drive to help Brieanna Grey, a six-year old girl in need of a liver transplant, after she had lost part of her family in a car accident. The Lodge raised $2,500.00 for that cause. To this day, the members of the Lodge thank all the Brothers for donating to help this little girl.
In 2002, Worshipful Master Dan Ludquist had the sad duty of having a Masonic Funeral for PGM Jim Blackwell as his first act as Master. In July during a special meeting of the Lodge, it was decided to sell the building as there were estimates of up to $150,000.00 for needed building repairs. Hiram Lodge No. 21 moved to Reliance and uses the Gethsemane Masonic Building.
The Lodge has taken part in many other activities through the years including some of the following, honoring the Widows with flowers at Christmas, Mother’s Day, and Ladies Night, attending a Navy or Delaware football game, a golf tournament to benefit the “Lewes James Blackwell Scholarship Fund” and having summer “Crab Feasts”.
The future continues to be bright for Hiram Lodge No. 21 and they look forward to the next chapter in their history and in the history of the Grand Lodge.
In 2010, Hiram Lodge moved into their new building and all who have attended a Masonic function at this location have been very impressed with their new accommodations.
